A friend in a web forum recently asked everyone "So how was your decade?"..... I have been doing a lot of introspection and reflection on this lately....

For me this past decade has shaped me as a person and altered the course of my life in a thousand different profound, dramatic, tragic, and simultaneously amazing and beautiful ways. The past ten years I have had some of the most intense life experiences, met some of the most incredible people, lost a lot of great people, learned a ton about myself, about music and art, about passion and ambition, and so much of the ups and downs of this whole insane world around me....

I have lived in 2 different major cities this past decade, one of which I was ousted from during one of the greatest American disasters of all time (Katrina).... I've been rich and I've been poor, up and down, the king and the fool.... I have fallen head over heals in love and had my heart broken on 3 separate occasions..... I have made many new allies, and have been let down by others.... I have made amends and reconnected with old friends, and I have said tearful farewells to others, including some of my biggest influences / closest brothers and sisters in music.... And I have written, recorded and performed songs about it ALL (and even had one gorgeous piece written for me!).....

Why hide it? Why deny it? Why try to downplay it?.... It is what it is, and what it is is the human condition and LIFE itself!.. I proudly wear my heart on my sleeve, quite literally, as this past decade I have gradually acquired more ink to further relay the tale... The tale so far with no regrets and no apologies for giving it my all, for speaking my mind (no matter how politically incorrect, awkward, or painful), and taking many of the risks most won't even consider...

I can safely say I have embraced every last drop of the good, the bad, and the ugly of all of it..... Curiously enough, this kind of reflection on the 2000's (or "The Aughts" as I like to call them) has recently triggered a look even further back, all the way back into the 90s for me... perhaps because it has taken this long for some things in life to come full circle, to reconnect with old friends and family... and furthermore, to attempt to step out on that ledge again and really embrace the new friends with an open and honest heart.... To truly recognize the impact this entire journey has had on so many of us thus far....

I can't settle on saying whether or not the past decade was either good or bad...... It was BOTH and it was EVERY shade of gray in between. Ultimately, I can say with the utmost passion and conviction, that it has been FUCKING EPIC!
